It seems disheartening that God did not allow Moses into the Promised Land doesn't it?
But before we get downcast lets think about Moses in the New Testament (Moses in the New Testament?!?)
Luke 9:28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"— not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!" 36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
We see here that not only did Moses get to enter the Promised Land but he did it in splendid glory and with the best of company!
But now we need to wrestle with the other text like the Apostles not wanting to leave and fulfill their mission. Aren't we the same way in our Christian walk we want to have those mountain top experiences with God and we wish to go from mountain top to mountain top. But the plants grow in the valleys so our life will be full of ups and downs but we know that Christ is with use through it all. Lastly the statement from God himself "this is my son, listen to him!". This is esp a struggle for me cause anyone who knows me knows I am not the best listener. And Jesus gave commandments so it is not only sitting at his feet (aka the Bible) but following those commandments.
Great scriptures, Brian! What an encouragement that despite the devastating consequence of his disobedience, Moses was still a recipient of a glorious reward - and one far greater than an earthly Promised Land. Puts our current sufferings into a bit of a clearer perspective, hmm?
ReplyDeleteHow quietly the Lord must have been praying for his choice three disciples to fall asleep (sound familiar? ...Matthew 26:40,43,45). I bet they were sorry they'd missed out on that supernatural conversation/exchange. How can we ensure that we don't? By listening, absolutely, and also by purposing to...
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world and undergoing the same kind of sufferings." [I bet Moses appreciated the next part] "And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen." -I Peter 5:8-10
And Who better to get the power than a God who has "only begun to show [His] ... greatness and ... mighty hand."
Keep the thoughts coming, Brian!
Cheerio!
